Test 1

Creating a vm instead of a ct, vm console works fine,
new ct, same error

Found this entry on the proxmox forum:

https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/unable-to-open-shell-connection-failed-error-500-timeout-while-waiting-for-port-5900-to-get-ready.85810/

Gave it a shot, changed the resolv.conf file, added 127.0.0.1

Reboot, no fix

Another thread: https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/console-on-lxc-ending-in-connection-failed-error-500-timeout-while-waiting-for-port-5900-to-get-ready.57717/

This looks a lot like the issue I have

Checking ports, but no 5900 port listening,

Trying a different browser, same result

On another thread I found the feedback below

Disabling IPv6 + reboot, no fix.

Next step, comparing settings with working proxmox server:

Removing the comment symbol in proxmox2 solves the issue,
the IPv6 was not the issue but the localhost was.
trying to find the localhost through external DNS failed to make the guests available to connect.
changing the hostfile on proxmox2, making the localhost entry available fixed the issue.
If I figured the first thread out and checked the correct settings, this might have been fixed sooner.

Still glad it's solved and the webui consoles work again on the pve and lxc.

Adding a haiku for fun:

It’s not DNS
There’s no way it’s DNS
It was DNS
